/assets/0c176c38-f7f4-44d8-a7d3-24e94d6ad165.jpg With the rising popularity in sales of new vehicles with automatic transmissions, there is an ever increasing opportunity for garages and independent outlets to seize the opportunity and claim back works from franchised and main dealers, by undertaking ATF servicing. Symptoms of a tired or expired ATF Modern automatic transmissions are very complex, as are the ATFs that are used within them, and with the day-to-day heavy loading during acceleration and deceleration through the drive line, natural thermal load degradation of the product is inevitable. Over time ATF will degrade, due to it carrying out the function it was designed to do. Over the lifecycle of the ATF, viscosity diminishes, and the lubricity properties tail off, along with its ability to retain its “Hygroscopic” (moisture absorbing) properties. Symptoms of an expired ATF are resonation through the vehicle cabin, slipping/clunky gear changes, shaking, slow gear selection, vehicle creeping, decreased performance and MPG. This all results from an expired ATF being unable to encapsulate dirt/sludge particles produced by wear and tear of the moving components within the transmission, resulting in them settling in the control valves, clutch plates and the torque converter. If any of these symptoms appear, it is safe to say it’s high time to change the ATF. ATF Opportunities for Independent universal businesses When an automatic transmission starts to show failure symptoms, it has perhaps in the past been misdiagnosed as worn brake bands within the unit, but this may not be the case. Usually, the brake bands are simply contaminated by dirt or sludge that the expired ATF has not been able to encapsulate, resulting in insufficient grip and slipping of the bands. This underlines the importance of changing ATF regularly and on time. Many transmission complaints are flagged by the user and can be resolved cheaply, and early lifecycle failure of the transmission can be prevented by changing the ATF regularly. Modern ATFs, although highly complex and produced from high-quality synthetic products, have enabled manufacturers to increase change intervals, but this does not mean that they are fill for life, and they still need to be replaced or refreshed. Therefore, here is an opportunity for the universal garages to deliver an enhanced service by being able to replace the ATF, giving a symptom failure free drive to its customers. Should you Rinse? Or Change? Changing the ATF with a coil machine that washes, cleans and fills is one solution. These machines are connected via the return line to the oil circuit of the transmission, allowing the ATF to circulate between the transmission/coil machine, and filters the fluid within it. But is this cost effective? For example, the amount of time flushing itself takes only half an hour, but in many cases, two or three hours tinkering may entail before the coil machine adapter is mounted on the gearbox - you may have to remove brackets and other fixings to ensure the unit is mounted correctly or the coil machine will not filter the fluid correctly. Rinsing is technically a good solution, but financially it can be the expensive option. Moreover, it is not always necessary. Many cars have a sump on the gearbox and the torque converter, and the coil machine cannot retrieve and filter all of the contaminated ATF. Online manuals via brand and model In practice, many auto technicians do not seem to know how to change the ATF, and are under the aspersion that a large investment in tooling is required to undertake the replacement of an ATF in a modern transmission. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! Nearly all motor factors carry transmission filters and replacement sump plugs, and with the extensive MPM ATF fluids that are available from 1L to bulk, and with the online MPM manuals, the independent auto technicians have everything they need to claw back business from the main dealers. MPM Oil wants to support you, and has placed thousands of car manuals online explaining how the ATF can be replaced / refreshed regardless of make or model. The right car is easily selected via brand, and each car has its own individual manual. If the same transmission unit is used in different cars / models, the procedure may not be the same, but with the vehicle specific manual you can identify the correct process applicable to that vehicle. Step by step guidance The MPM manuals are provided in multiple languages, and have detailed technical drawings identifying key components such as drain plugs, filter location etc. Detailed step-by-step processes are contained, also identifying the manufacturers’ process, not only for removal and replacement, but detailed process guides for ensuring the system has been refreshed correctly, and the system is bled and primed. For example: “Push the gear lever in position ‘P’, make sure the vehicle is level, remove the lower engine cover, let the engine idle, press the brake pedal and hold it down. Select all gears, pause in each gear for two to three seconds. Maintain the temperature of the transmission fluid into the holes until the temperature at the level is of 35 °C.” The information contained within the online manuals are so clear that even auto technicians who have never changed an ATF before can undertake the task with confidence. Free download manuals Normally no special tooling is required, but should it be necessary, many factors now loan or hire out the tooling for a small outlay. The manual will indicate if any special tools are required, and detail the official OE part numbers for the said tooling. The new ATF download and print manuals are unique to MPM Oil, and we have already placed manuals for many thousands of vehicles at www.mpmoil.nl and we are adding additional manuals on a daily basis. This service is mainly for European and Japanese vehicles from model year 2000. There are no logins or memberships required, the manuals are free to download and print. MPM Oil aims to assist the independent auto technician, by providing them with process procedures to enable their business to thrive. MPM can assist you so that you don’t have to be hesitant in undertaking ATF replacement on modern fleet transmissions. The MPM product recommendation tool not only specifies the correct OE ATF, but all other fluids and ancillary MPM products too. /assets/e80aad72-405a-48e6-9db7-7da9840d9ae9.jpg
